Your EDM – Week In Music 3/28/17

Tue, 03/28/2017 - 9:59pm

This week on [Your EDM’s – Week In Music] we were blessed with a ton of new major works.

deadmau5 in conjunction with his imprint label mau5trap unveiled the compilation album We Are Friends, Vol. 6 including tracks by label signees: Matt Lange, Tinlicker, Oliver Winters, No Mana, Neus, Enzo Bennet, BlackGummy and ATTLAS just to name a few.

Chicago-based duo Louis The Child released their debut EP Love Is Alive. The brand new EP consists of 6 tracks, including collaborations with singers and songwriters: Evalyn, Chelsea Cutler, Blaise Railey, Ashe and Elohim. The EP is out now via Ultra Records.

Over the weekend Dutch wunderkind Martin Garrix released the second volume of remixes for his hit single “Scared To Be Lonely” with Dua Lipa. The second addition of remixes include 6 different renditions of “Scared To Be Lonely” by: Gigamesh, Medasin, Loud Luxury, Conro, Loopers and Joe Mason. The remix pack is out now via Martin’s imprint label STMPD RCRDS.

This week we also saw a number of fresh singles from all across the EDM spectrum.

Fresh off the Ultra live stage KSHMR is back with a brand new collaboration “Back To Me” with Crossnaders featuring vocalist Micky Blue out now via Spinnin’ Records.

Chris Lake dropped the minimal techno and G-house influenced tune “I Want You” on Skrillex’s imprint label OWSLA.

After a short social media departure Boombox Cartel are back with “Alamo” featuring Shoffy on the vocals. Staying true to their previous records, “Alamo” maintains all the stylistic hallmarks that people have come to know and love Boombox Cartel for, including an enormously long buildup and heavy trap sounds. The new release can be found on Diplo’s imprint label Mad Decent.

Niko The Kid in collaboration with Bee’s Knees and CADE on vocals deliver “Give It To You” a summery house tune laced with disco vibes perfect for the upcoming warm season. The track is out now on Armin Van Buuren’s sub label Armada Trice.

Dutch producer based in LA, Morten released arguably his heaviest track to date “Hypnotized.”

This week’s remixes don’t fall short of simply phenomenal.

Anonymous 17 year old producer, heroless released his remix of Vanic‘s “Too Soon” out now via Disruptor Records.

Ultra Music Festival Miami closer, DJ Snake enlisted his fellow Pardon My French colleague Malaa to remix Snake’s collaboration with Travis Scott, Migos and G4shi “Oh Me Oh My.” The remix stays true to Malaa’s signature G-house sound.

EDM-legend Tiësto put his big room touch on Matthew Koma‘s “Hard To Love.”

Rain Man among many others including DVBBS, Bad Royale and Attom remixed Steve Aoki and former One Direction member Louis Tomlinson hit collaboration “Just Hold On.”

Spoon Hints At Unreleased Collaboration With Jack Ü

Tue, 03/28/2017 - 9:55pm

In an interview held with Rolling Stone earlier this month regarding the release of their ninth studio album, legendary rock group Spoon gave details on the existence of an unreleased collaboration with none other than the Skrillex and Diplo supergroup, Jack Ü.

According to bandmembers Britt Daniel and Alex Fischel, the group met with Jack Ü at a mansion in Malibu, California, allegedly owned by “a guy who made porn.” Initially, Daniel said, their intention was to beef up Spoon’s track “Can I Sit Next To You,” the sixth on their March-released album Hot Thoughts. But when Skrillex showed up, they ended up jamming for about 20 minutes.

“He worked so fast,” Fischel says […]. “There was one point where the computer glitched out and he just yanked out the audio interface and just kept going on another machine. And all of a sudden, he just goes, ‘Bah! Bah!’ just sampling his voice into the laptop microphone and he made a melody with that. It was like he had Tourette’s or something.”

“I didn’t know what the fuck he was doing with that, ‘Bah!’” Daniel says, as they both laugh. “Then shortly after you’d hear it in the song.”

Even though no new details have been received regarding the track’s potential release date or title, its presence in recent interviews suggests the project might surface sooner rather than later. However, given recent comments made by Diplo, we don’t know when any new Jack Ü material might surface, let alone this one.

Win Tickets To See Galantis In New York On 4/8

Tue, 03/28/2017 - 6:33pm

If you were at Ultra or watching the live stream from home, you know that Galantis absolutely crushed this year’s main stage performance. Though they didn’t premiere any new music as in year’s past (and we’re really sad about that), the performance itself was one hit after another, indicative of their uncanny ability to just pump out incredible songs.

Galantis will be stopping by the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York in a couple weeks for back to back dates, and we’re giving one fan the chance to win a pair of ticket to Saturday’s show, no strings attached. Enter via the portal below, and read on for an exclusive interview with Galantis about their hit track “Rich Boy,” performing live, and returning to Coachella.

How did “Rich Boy” come to be? What was your inspiration behind the song?

The inspiration around Rich Boy… This is kinda how we start a lot of our songs, it was a piece of a vocal that was sent to us by a good friend, it’s our daughter singing and I believe she was 8 year olds when he recorded that vocal. So we started to mess around with the vocal and took it from there, and it was possible piece after possible piece and that became Rich Boy.

How do you approach production? Why is Galantis production different from your other side projects?

Regarding our vocals and vocalists on our tracks, I think the reason we do it is we want to have a completely open mind and freedom. No rules, no regulations to how we approach songwriting in general. Just because we can, we will. You know, whatever comes to mind, we’ll do it. We can treat a vocal however we want to treat a vocal, we can make any decision because that’s just how we do it in Galantis. You know, it could be a friend singing, us singing with a vocoder, there’s no limits.

How do you feel about going back to Coachella this year?

So we’re heading back to the desert, to Coachella, and this is a special one for us. This is where we did our first show 3 years ago. Our first Galantis show over. It was a huge moment for us. Standing behind the stage, waiting to face the crowd, knowing it had only been two weeks since we released our first piece of music and not knowing if anyone was going to be there, it was an amazing crowd. We were met with such love, and that’s the start, the root to why we wanted to continue to do this. Going back there now feels very special, we’ll be creating a new show. More of everything. More drums, more of our studio is going to come to life on stage, more energy, higher energy. We’re so excited, can’t wait.

How do you feel about touring in Brazil for the first time?

Finally, we’re going to Brazil! Galantis in Brazil! This is something we’ve been waiting for and excited for, finally going to Brazil to perform. We love the country, we’ve been a few times, but never performing as Galantis. And we’ve been seeing so much love and so much support from Brazil so we’re glad to go and finally give back. Plus, we’re going during Carnival in Brazil, which I’ve never seen. That’s another bonus! We’re so excited, see you soon Brazil and lets bring the heat.

What can fans expect from your live show?

So the Galantis live show… The goal has always been to recreate that feeling and vibe we have when we write and work on our music, when we create and are open minded and excited about everything going on in the studio. We’re jumping around, singing, all that. We try to do that live. We bring as many of our tools and gadgets, any gear that we enjoy in the studio we try to bring it to life on stage. We try to keep it an open flow, you know the format… We change it up, so we can make it a new show each night. You know that’s the core of Galantis live. So we definitely have one foot in DJing, we have such love for dance music and DJing, but we’re also very high energy, creative people that need our toys. We love the drums, and we have some pads, some filters, some samplers. That’s just been a part of Galantis since day one.

To understand the way we work on stage, we actually treat the sounds, the live elements, things that trigger from samplers and drums into our DJ mixer. So whatever Lionus is doing I can treat and vice versa, so it’s really a lot of teamwork up there, and that for us is the whole point, to be sharing those moments with someone and be creative. We don’t even know what we’re going to do when we do it, so it’s like a whole play looking at each other, because whatever I’m sending to Lionus’ channel he doesn’t even know it’s coming, which makes for funny and challenging kind of moments. It’s always good to have a part of danger in the show. You could try stuff and be like oh that was not so good and other times you’re like that’s great but that’s the thing is it’s live, it’s supposed to be like that. It’s dynamic. It’s a door open for improvisation. I feel like that’s something that we’re missing when we’re DJing, we need a gear shift of dynamic. Like banging hard on guitar or not banging hard on guitar.

To be able to do that in our world as a studio tool is normal, but in the live environment that’s the root. That’s where we started and that’s what we’re building on.

What are your plans for the rest of this year?

So Galantis 2017… We are, we will be releasing way more music than we have been before. We’ve been very busy in the studio and we’ve got tons of music coming out. It will be our biggest and most exciting year I believe. We’re going to be touring more than ever, this year is about heavy touring. We’re going to try and hit up all the major cities in Europe too. We hear you guys out there and eventually we’ll make it to your city for sure. We’re listening to all your requests, so please tune in, talk to us, tell us what you need and we’ll be there. We’ll be back in the US of course doing lots of shows, we’ll be doing more Vegas… Yeah, lots of music, lots of touring.

Say Hello To V-MODA’s Crossfade 2 Wireless Headphones

Tue, 03/28/2017 - 6:19pm

V-MODA has been locked in research and development, and the new iteration of their flagship wireless headphone is nothing less than incredible. Say hello to longer battery life, more versatility, and even more sculpted audio with the Crossfade 2 Wireless.

Announced today, March 28th, the Crossfade 2 Wireless boasts a 15% larger battery to offer 14+ hours of playback on a single charge, and bluetooth capability that supports connectivity with two devices simultaneously up to 33 feet. V-MODA’s beloved CliqFold mechanism has also been included for enhanced portability, a feature painfully lacking on the first Crossfade Wireless.

Additionally, the Crossfade 2 Wireless is compatible with V-MODA’s entire range of accessories, from customized 3D printed shields to the BoomPro Mic for gaming (though there’s a built-in mic on the right ear cup, and another in the included SpeakEasy cable). Starting at $330, these glorious headphones are currently available in three colorways: Matte Black, Matte White, and Rose Gold.

Also, resulting from popular demand, the new model even comes with redesigned ear cushions for a better fit right out of the box. CEO Val Kolton spent months searching for the right foam for the improved ear cups, and both the shape and material are honed to the unique specs of the headphone for the best sound experience possible. After all, the “fit is the sound.”

After V-MODA partnered with Japan’s Roland on 808 Day (August 8th) last year, the two have set on a mission to redefine and develop the next breakthrough in music products. As a result, they’ve also taken the famed sound profile of the M-100, and sculpted it ever-so-slightly to offer more accurate replication as both “instrument engineer and artist intended.” To preserve sound quality, these headphones opt for passive noise isolation to create a pure 3D soundstage, allowing the patent-pending 50mm dual-diaphragm drivers and CCAW coils to shine.

And true to V-MODA fashion, the Crossfade 2 Wireless is tuned for analog use first, resulting in an improved bluetooth experience right off the bat. Unlike other wireless headphones, these beasts can be used with the included mil-spec cord, which shuts down the interior electronics for zero-latency analog experience, essentially turns these into an improved version of their flagship M-100 headphones. Not to mention, you can use the VAMP amplifier in the V-MODA Remix Speaker to get the most out of their 32 ohm impedance.

The improved frequency response of its analog mode is so good in fact, that V-MODA is urging DJs to begin using the Crossfade 2 Wireless in wired mode during performances. Of course, being Hi-Res Standard certified by the Japan Audio Society doesn’t hurt either…

If that sounds alright, but you want the best of the best, and are looking for a headphone with Qualcomm’s aptX codec, V-MODA packed the technology into the Rose Gold version for near CD-quality sound. Head to for more information.

David Guetta Premieres “Blue (Da Ba Dee)” Remake with Bebe Rexha at Ultra [LISTEN]

Tue, 03/28/2017 - 6:10pm

Ultra Music Festival was full of surprises, but this blast from the past was one of the most unexpected moments for sure…

David Guetta and Bebe Rexha teamed up for a revamped version of “Blue (Da Ba Dee)” by Eiffel 65, which he premiered during his Main Stage set Sunday night.

As the familiar synths rise Guetta shouts, “This one is exclusive, Ultra! Later in the video below, he continues, “You’re the very first people on the planet to hear this record, and I made it specially for you!”

The melody remains, but the lyrics are totally different. The pop star belts out:

I’m Blue, yeah I’m feeling alright
Baby, I’mma have the best f*cking night of my life
And, wherever it takes me, I’m down for the ride
Baby, don’t you know I’m blue?
Yeah, I’m feelin’ alright

The original 1999 single, (yeah, it’s been that long) is truly a gem, but what do you think of this version?

Your EDM Premiere: Noisia – Mantra (Mat Zo Remix)

Tue, 03/28/2017 - 5:26pm

I’ve done a few premieres for Noisia during my time as a writer for Your EDM, but I’m not sure I’ve been as excited for a premiere as I am for this one. “Mantra” remains one of the most intense tracks from their most recent album, Outer Edges. How you do you improve upon something that doesn’t need any improvement?

You get Mat Zo to remix it.

Mat Zo, seemingly without effort, transformed this drum & bass, neurofunk roller into a sort of mind-melting, indescribable remix that blends various bass genres and an almost ethnic vibe to carry it. It’s one of the more unique remixes from Mat Zo or anyone that we’ve heard, and the pairing of Noisia and Mat Zo together is nearly enough to cause spontaneous arousal.

It’s not hard to think of producers who could have done this remix justice – Joe Ford, Memtrix or The Upbeats all come to mind. But what Mat Zo has done goes beyond just “doing it justice,” rather he’s reinvented the wheel of sorts, and we’re digging this design a lot, too.

Listen to Mat Zo’s remix of “Mantra” by Noisia below.

“I had this production on my computer for a few months, and I couldn’t find the right vocal melody. A friend of mine told me about Tep No, so I sent him the track, and in just a few days he sent me his vocals. From there I added the whistle sound to make the track catchier… and that’s that.”

Arrests, Medical Calls Way Down At Ultra Music Festival 2017

Tue, 03/28/2017 - 12:57pm

By all accounts, this year’s Ultra Music Festival was a complete success. The whole weekend, we’ve heard barely any complaints about the festival aside from some live stream issues, but everyone on the ground in Miami seems to have had a fantastic time. And just-released information from Miami police and fire teams definitely corroborate the newfound attitude that attendees had.

Over the course of the weekend, there were only 35 arrests (out of a total of 150,000 attendees), a drop of nearly 50 percent from the previous year. Similarly, only 59 people were transported to area hospitals.

“Education, co-operation and everybody is maturing,” said Miami police Lt. Freddie Cruz.

“This year people were definitely following advice,” and laying off the drugs, said Miami Fire Rescue Capt. Ignatius Carroll.

Ultra has introduced amnesty boxes at the entrances, the age of the festival is now 18+, and new fences have been installed to prevent the kind of catastrophe that affected security guard Ericka Mack in 2014, when fans broke down a bordering fence and trampled her.

The high price of the festival and hotels in the area have also seemed to stave off a more disreputable crowd. Overall, this year’s Ultra was a big success. We can’t wait to see what they have in store next year for their 20th anniversary!
