Games, Health, and Workshops; Mamby on the Beach Expands with Their “More Than Music” Series

Wed, 05/31/2017 - 2:37pm

Mamby on the Beach has always strived to bring something different to the table; to showcase a beautiful venue, to expand musical tastes, and to allow attendee’s a chance to feel the sand in-between their toes without a care in the world. Thats why they wanted to take things even further in 2017 with the introduction of their “More Than Music” series.

Art

If you have attended Mamby before then you are no stranger to the sprawling grass walkway you take into the festival and you already know how it is littered with different art installations to help enhance the atmosphere around you. Not only will you get to take those pieces in but you will also be able to witness live painting demonstrations by local spray paint artists Afro Killa, Don Mega, Leekovision and more. On top of that you will also be able to enjoy the heat provided by the live fire performance by the Pyrotechniq and Chicago Moon Fire Jams as they spin and dance all while bending the flames to their will. No matter where you turn at Mamby you will be able to soak in the beauty that so many different people have crafted for everyone to enjoy.

Health & Wellness

To be able to enjoy yourself to the fullest one must be at their fullest in terms of happiness and well-being. Which is why Mamby has felt the desire to give back to its attendee’s by hosting wellness workshops and yoga sessions. Returning this year is the Burning Man art car, Solarbeatz. This art car is a mobile soundstage and performance venue that is the pinnacle of clean energy, it’s all run off the sun’s rays! Solarbeatz will be the host of many activities across the two days, including silent disco yoga. These sessions, put on by Nadi Yoga (a collective of wellness-minded individuals all seeking to create movement within ourselves and one another), will be done in the vinyasa style and available at all skill levels.

On top of that a multitude of different wellness workshops will be provided for attendee’s to be able to enjoy for free.

Mastering Everyday Movement & Finding Time for Play: Functional Movement that Encourage Longevity & Lifelong Mobility

Nike trainers and founders of Live Better Co., Jason Loebig & Bret Gornik, will be walking fans through a complete series of “functional movement” that aim to help promote lifelong mobility. This workshop will have a strong focus on grounding, walking, hiking, pushups, pull-ups, squatting, carrying weight in unevenly distributed ways, and challenging yourself to always try something new. It is a perfect way to be able to refresh yourself mid-day in order to keep your feet moving in the sand to your favorite artist and will also give you tools to continue to lead a fluid and mobile life even after the festival ends.

Barbecue Season Tips: Strategies to Defend Your Health When Charring, Smoking, and Grilling Foods

One of my favorite parts about warm weather is being able to walk around different neighborhoods and smell the distinctiveness of a BBQ in someone’s backyard. The downside of that is that those smoked meats aren’t always the healthiest to put into your body, which is why Mamby wants to give you the tools to defend your health! This interactive course will provide information about the toxins caused by smoking and grilling meats, and the proper ways to protect ourselves from the harmful effects. From the use of marinades and low & slow methods, to a roundup of useful herbs, grill accessories and cooking oils; the Barbecue Tips workshop is the perfect way to prepare for the grilling season ahead.

Sanitize Smarter: Using Essential Oils & Intentionally Getting Dirty

Certified health coach, Marissa Moon, will lead this workshop in order to teach Mamby goers about the body’s natural, germ-fighting resistance and some of the history behind our modern “sanitized nation”. She will be able to walk everyone through the different milestones that have led to society that is obsessed with sanitation and prove why the human body still wants to get dirty. Moon will also lead a Q&A session with Herbalist Monica Yearwood to help give answers in regards to essential oils effectively and sanitizing smarter in the modern world.

Optimize Your Mind: Diet, Mindfulness & Lifestyle Approaches to Encourage Brain Cell Growth & Resilience at Any Age

Once again Moon will provide an in-depth look into “neurogenesis” – the process of growing new brain cells. This workshop is perfect for those individuals who share an interest in the brain as well as making important lifestyle choices that protect it. You will be able to learn what kind of foods both promote and inhibit brain health, what lifestyle habits affect neurogenesis, and how to prioritize your brain for maximum vitality.

Sexuality & Relationships

Sex and relationship coach, Caitlin V, will be present conducting a workshop for attendee’s who are interested in promoting positivity in these area’s of their life. You will be able to participate in her themed workshops over the course of the weekend which will include things such as “Self-Love and Self-Care”, “Being in Relationships”, and “Love and Light Heartedness”.

Fashion & Beauty

It’s time to feel refreshed and up your festival looks with the dedicated Henna Art tattoo station, Body Art Dome, and Red7 Salon “Beach Beauty Oasis” Braid Bar. Attendee’s will be able to get the chance to choose between beautiful henna designs drawn on their body to help accentuate their look, magical airbrushed art and metallic designs to give a crazy pop of color to themselves , or get the perfect beach hair-do so you no longer have to worry about getting your hair in your face when you’re grooving to some tunes through the night.

Beach-Friendly Games

What better way to enjoy a perfect day at the beach than getting down and dirty in a game of volleyball or perhaps getting your frustration out with a well thrown water balloon. Each day you’ll be able to group up at 5:15pm in front of the Beach Stage for the Beach Battle Royale Water Fight; a perfect way to have a great time with friends and an easy way to beat the summer time heat! But in case getting soaked isn’t your cup of tea then maybe you’ll want to serve it up during a round of beach volleyball games put on by Chicago Sport & Social Club each day!

Louder Than a Bomb

By partnering with Young Chicago Authors, Mamby brings something fresh to the table this year. On Sunday, June 25th, will be treated to a sampling of the organization’s most acclaimed event: Louder Than A Bomb. Known as the largest youth poetry festival in the world, Louder Than A Bomb is a tournament-style poetry festival where students represent their schools through original solo and group performances. At Mamby, Young Chicago Authors will provide an entire day of engaging live pieces and activities including madlibs, wordplay games and more starting at 2 PM, headlined by The Bomb Squad live poetry performances and a curated open mic sessions at 4 PM.

YCA has grown to become a major part of of the city’s cultural landscape. YCA’s programs serve as an introduction to and immersion in a vibrant literary community that transcends cultural and socio-economic boundaries. This event will be a perfect way to express and connect with like-minded individuals around you as well as diving deeper inside ones own self.

RL Grime Sends Fans An Exclusive Physical Newsletter With Some Important Information

Wed, 05/31/2017 - 2:35pm

A select group of RL Grime fans received a very special package in the mail from the man himself, describing his next move as an artist… and it’s a big one.

In short, over the next year at least, all of RL Grime’s aesthetic will be governed by one simple concept: Nova.

“A nova or classical nova is an astronomical event that causes the sudden appearance of a bright “new” star, that slowly fades from view over several weeks or many months.

Causes of their dramatic appearance varies depending on the circumstances of the progenitor stars […].”

Included in the packet is a large degree of what some might call “lore” – there are transcripts from a studio session with Miguel, during the recording of their collaboration “Stay For It.” RL Grime includes a personal letter to fans describing the concept behind Nova and what it means for him as an artist, and how it applies to fans, as well. There are also a handful of pictures of Henry, in the studio and on stage, as well as various concept images.

One page includes the URL bcofu.com and the Instagram handle, @becauseofu. This, if you remember, is the name of one of his singles from 2015 released via WEDIDIT.

Finally, an image of a Nova on the last page surrounded by a group of locations, including San Francisco, El Paso, Nashville, Bston, Toronto, and more. The table of contents lists this page as just “Cities,” though the meaning behind them is more vague. More than likely, they are locations for tour dates, but we don’t know for sure.

RL Grime’s letter to fans reads:

Since the release of VOID, I’ve quietly been working on the next chapter of the RL Grime project. I take pride in ensuring there is true meaning and purpose behind the music I release. The landscape has changed significantly since my last album, and the past few years have been helpful in gaining perspective on what that purpose is.

I’ve been lucky enough to travel the world off the things I’ve made, and the realization I’ve come to is this: From the artwork, to the music videos, to the live show; hearing the music is just a part of a much greater whole. The thing that unites it isn’t just RL Grime, it’s your experiences. For this next chapter, just like you’ve been with me to share the results of the process, this time I want to share the journey with you as well.

I am calling this journey Nova.

Nova will define and encompass every part of the RL Grime project over the coming years. More than just an album, or a show, or a single narrative, I want the Nova project to create spaces where you can feel part of the process and support platforms for your own ideas, while allowing me to share mine too. So it won’t just be me setting the storyline. Your input and the way you engage with my music and performance has always driven me forward, and will be a vital part of what I do over the coming year. To see if we can make something both mysterious and honest… build off the feeling of getting the whole picture, from start to finish.

Nova will always, always, start with the fans. To those who have been with me since the beginning: thank you. I can’t wait to see where this journey leads.

– Henry

EMBRZ Releases Official Music Video For “Heartlines” Feat. Meadowlark [Premiere]

Wed, 05/31/2017 - 1:20pm

Music videos are tricky things, especially in the EDM sphere. For songs usually without lyrics, artists are usually relegated to odd combinations of visualizers or a thrown-together plot line. Obviously, the addition of lyrics and an inherent meaning to a song will help in these endeavors.

The music video for “Heartlines” by EMBRZ is a brilliant example of artistic and musical creativity combining for an otherworldly experience. First and foremost, the track isn’t totally “EDM” – it’s not something you’d hear on the main stage of a festival. The video, in a way, reflects this. It represents a series of quaint and disarming scenes following along with the lyrics, showing the story of two separate worlds connected by the oddest of circumstances: sewer grates.

One world is beautiful but lonely, the other is bustling with commotion, but otherwise unfulfilling. In the video, the two worlds never officially merge, though the video is “to be continued.”

We’re excited to see the continuation of this story in the future. For now, check out “Heartlines” featuring Meadowlark below, via Ultra Music.

With the release of this video, EMBRZ also announces his debut EP Progress, out July 7 via Ultra Music.

“When I was writing music my dad would always ask me ‘Are you making progress?’ – Which is where I got both the name and concept from. I like the idea of ‘progress’. Progress is never a finished destination, it’s always about constantly improving, experimenting and exploring new ideas. Which is kinda my philosophy when it comes to music production. My goal for this EP was to put together a collection of tracks that varied in style as I’ve always been a fan of multiple genres.”

ZHU’s Remix Competition Just Unearthed A Bass Prodigy With Only 165 Followers

Tue, 05/30/2017 - 10:04pm

The coolest thing about remix contests is that a dream can be launched into a career in the blink of an eye, and that’s the way it’s looking for Ouza!

The little known producer — with only 165 followers on SoundCloud at this exact moment — has reworked ZHU‘s creeped out, minimal house track “Nightcrawler” into his own intense, bass-centric certified banger. Taking the term “remix” to the extreme, Ouza deliveres an entirely new stylistic life form while maintaining the original idea ZHU put in place.

The mysterious producer has little information on social media accounts, so while we’d love to give you more background, we’re sure his work will speak for itself.

We’re obsessed Ouza’s heavy version of  “Nightcrawler” and would be shocked if ZHU doesn’t take notice!

Calvin Harris Insults Deadmau5 in the Most Scottish Way Ever

Tue, 05/30/2017 - 9:58pm

Sometimes Twitter beef is just too funny to be taken seriously, and this interaction between Calvin Harris and Deadmau5 is a prime example!

In an attempt to mock Harris, the Mau5 turned his helpful production tip directed toward pop producers into an insult that ultimately backfired…

Pop producers learn more chord progressions

— Calvin Harris (@CalvinHarris) May 27, 2017

Pop producers, learn more chord progressions. https://t.co/hDb2TXned9

— dead mow cinco (@deadmau5) May 28, 2017

Because, Harris shut it down perfectly with this comeback…

@CalvinHarris WEE FANNY!!!???

— dead mow cinco (@deadmau5) May 29, 2017

According to Urban Dictionary, there are a couple of different versions of a “wee fanny.”

1. literal meaning: small vagina
2. commonly used in glasgow by ”neds” to describe someone who is silly, annoying. ie dave shut up yah wee fanny.

Now, we’ll have to add in:

3. Deadmau5

Fellow Scottish house producer Chris Lake, and others jumped in on the conversation…

@deadmau5 @CalvinHarris Haha, I’ve not heard that one for a long time. Up there with dunderhead!

— Chris Lake (@chrislake) May 29, 2017

@deadmau5 @CalvinHarris To be fair, this is a top-class Scottish insult.

— Daniel Campbell (@DanCampbellDJ) May 29, 2017

@deadmau5 @CalvinHarris He called you Fannymau5, you gonna take that, bro?

— eighty fingers (@eightyfingers) May 29, 2017

At this point the EDM legends should just suck it up and be friends, because this is ridiculously silly!

Lipless’s “Brilliance” Is Just That

Tue, 05/30/2017 - 8:45pm

Lipless comes into the week releasing a tune that is sheer beauty in a song. If you remember earlier this year, he was nominated for a Grammy for Best Remixer with Kaskade, for RYX’s “Only.” The Australian-born, LA-based producer is now breaking out as an artist in his own right. The song’s catchy bassline and plucky guitar riffs, accompanied by soothing vocals, create another hard to define tune. Lipless’ clean productions skills give “Brilliance” a liveliness that will make listeners continue to embrace this artist’s unique sound.

The Aussie transplant takes us on a musical uplifting but hunting journey through chords and scales that make us wish we were on a secluded island remote from humans but full of life.

Limitless – Lightspeed

Tue, 05/30/2017 - 8:43pm

Limitless, a Los Angeles based producer, has recently brought all eyes towards him by being named Icon Collective’s “Student of The Year”. After a phenomenal EP, and a strong original, Limitless is back with his latest single, “Lightspeed.”

The track starts off with airy synths, and the foreshadowing of the songs eventual chorus. Building quickly into the first verse with some interesting melodies, we’re quickly treated to a great vocal performance by Limitless himself. Between the deep bass stabs, harmonies, and vocal melody, the track is definitely a record you’d want on while cruising down the highway.

With a talent as promising as this, one should expect Limitless to blow up soon. Follow him here, and stream “Lightspeed” below!

Your EDM Premiere: Killbox – Clickbait feat. Rymetyme

Tue, 05/30/2017 - 7:31pm

Killbox are both new and not new. Late last year, dance publications were scrambling to figure out which of RAM’s current artists, if any, comprised this heavy, experimental new project. Turns out it’s Ed Rush and Audio, which both explains and doesn’t explain the techy, frenetic and headbanging tracks the project have released thus far.

Killbox’s first big release in 2014 was a dubstep track called “Drop Beats Not Bombs”, which featured on a number of dubstep compilations. The next two big ones, according to Beatport, were two halftime tracks, “Pitchfork” and “Surge”. Most recently the duo went back to their techy, 170 roots with “Bound to Others”, and now “Clickbait” promises to eclipse all of them with its hectic, techy and very experimental sound.

The beat on “Clickbait” is syncopated in an unexpected way; part neuro, part jump up, it leaves the listener guessing with many twists and turns, drops and breaks. The intro doesn’t really prepare audiences for what they’re in for, as it’s quite melodic and threatens liquid, but when the beat, the bass and the techy, teeth-grinding synths drop, the listener can rest east knowing they’re listening to a true RAM banger. RymeTyme’s lyrics will surprise listeners, as they match the feel of the track in both intensity and timbre, and even DnB heads who don’t like MCs will like this MC’s work on “Clickbait”.

“Clickbait” releases on RAM tomorrow, May 31. Click the player below for the streaming track..

Glastonbury Reveals Killer 2017 Full Lineup and Schedule with Major Lazer, Justice, Boys Noize, and More

Tue, 05/30/2017 - 7:21pm

Glastonbury 2017 just unveiled its entire, ridiculously stacked lineup that spans 77+ stages and boasts 1,000+ acts — easily making for one of the biggest and best mixes of acts at any music festival this summer!

Major Lazer, Justice, Sasha & John Digweed, Boys Noize, Fatboy Slim, DJ Shadow, Noisia, and more represent EDM at the long-running, highly acclaimed fest, while bands Radiohead and Foo Fighters take the top spots on the lineup. Acts like The XX, The Flaming Lips, and Glass Animals bridge the gap between electronic and alternative while the pop end of the spectrum is fully loaded with the likes of Ed Sheehan, Katy Perry, Lorde, Halsey, and Tove Lo (just to name a few)!

Along with the full lineup, Glastonbury released the schedule with more conflicts than you can possibly imagine. It all goes down June 21 – June 25 at Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing arts in Worthy Farm, Pilton, Somerset — so there’s still time to explore the artists and strategize a game plan.

Note: Glastonbury 2017 is already completely sold out! Full lineup and schedule here!

Kayzo Finally Releases The ID On Everyone’s Mind, “Whistle Wars”

Tue, 05/30/2017 - 7:12pm

If you’ve been to any bass show in the past 6 or so months, I can guarantee with 90% certainty that you heard “Whistle Wars” by Kayzo. It’s been a part of artists’ sets for so long, now that it’s out, I’m almost tired of it already.

BUT THEN…

I listen to the full song and not just the drop that a DJ would play out, and I have a chance to really appreciate the intricacies of the track. Yeah, the drop is fucking insane and what 99% of that 90% of people who’ve heard it know of, but the rest of the track features some really good songwriting.

The second part of the first drop especially features a nice switch up, but it’s the bridge in between the first and second drop that impresses me most. The delicate piano notes and rising synths, not to mention the breaks, really present a new side of Kayzo that most people wouldn’t hear in a typical DJ set.

So with that, check out “Whistle Wars” in its full glory below.

Calvin Harris Teased His Next Single On Snapchat

Tue, 05/30/2017 - 6:24pm

Calvin Harris, throughout the release of each single attached to his forthcoming album Funk Wav Bounce, Vol 1, has teased each release first on Snapchat. It seems, then, that we’ll be getting another new single fairly soon!

While making scrambled eggs (we recommend a non-stick pan, though), you can hear a clear clip of what’s sure to be his next single. Crossing off what collaborators he’s named and already worked with for the album, the male hip hop vocals could still belong to a number of people: D.R.A.M, Travis Scott, Big Sean, and maybe Schoolboy Q.

This one is either coming out this Friday or next, but it’s coming out soon.

Trey Songz – Nobody Else But You (Mozado Remix)

Tue, 05/30/2017 - 4:35pm

Following his recent flip of Beyonce’s “Naughty Girl” in March, producer Mozado has just returned with his newest remix, this time in the form of a smooth and sensual twist on Trey Songz‘ “Nobody Else But You.” Featuring crisp vocals, acoustic elements and an instantly catchy melody, the track explores the full potential of the original’s arrangement.

It begins with Trey Songz’ distant voice behind clean guitar strums before a simple, cutting percussion section takes over the pacing. A brief swell of noise brings us toward the chorus, where high-pitched vocal chops are thrown around the space above a warm sub bass and sultry chords.

Your EDM Premiere: LZ7 – Give My All

Tue, 05/30/2017 - 2:32pm

If you haven’t heard of LZ7, don’t worry, you’re not out of touch. Google describes them as a primarily Christian hip hop and dance group based out of the UK, so they occupy a distinct niche (a rather large one, at that, but a niche nonetheless). So when I was sent their new song “Give My All” and realized it was drum & bass, I hopped on it like an overeager chihuahua seeing a poodle in heat.

By all means, “Give My All” can be described as anthemic. Starting off with huge female vocals, and an instantly catchy melodic hook gives it a nostalgic and forward-facing vibe at the same time, feeling like you’ve heard this song for years and never before. As far as songwriting, the song is essentially perfect. From the hip hop verses to the massive chorus to the addictive bassline, everything is polished to an insane degree.

Pre-order is available for both “Give My All” and “Golden” now, with the release set to go live on Friday, June 2.

Location, Date, Lineup Announced For Ariana Grande’s Manchester Benefit Concert

Tue, 05/30/2017 - 2:28pm

Following the Manchester terrorist attack last week at an Ariana Grande concert, the pop singer promised fans that she would give back to the families of those who lost someone or had a family member who was injured in the attack. Grande promised to organize a benefit concert to raise money for victims.

“One Love Manchester” will take place on June 4 at the Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester. Coldplay, Katy Perry, Pharrell, Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Niall Horan and Take That will also take the stage.

This format bears resemblance to the WELCOME! concert that Zedd organized in Los Angeles in order to bring awareness to and raise money for those affected by the travel ban enacted by President Trump. The obvious difference in this case is the scope of those affected.

According to a press release, all proceeds from the show will go towards the “We Love Manchester Emergency Fund,” in partnership with the British Red Cross and Manchester City Council.

Loopers & Goja Take Us “Back To The Future” With New Single

Tue, 05/30/2017 - 1:17pm

I’ve already expressed my love for Goja enough times on Your EDM, but when put together with Loopers, expect a completely unstoppable duo. When the Dutch producer and Italian duo get in the studio together, you get incredible pieces like this “Back To The Future.”

It’s safe to say I’ve never really heard a tune like this before. Yeah, it’s electro house at its roots, but it’s so, so much more than that. The vocal chops are reminiscent of some Indian sensibilities, without being as direct as a song by KSHMR, for instance. At the same time, the drop is a wild mixture of distorted synths and pounding percussion; bringing the ethnic vocal chops back in as well gives it an even more layered flavor.

Expect equal parts headbanging and shuffling when this comes on at the function. Check out “Back To The Future” below.

DJ Snake Returns To Snapchat, Twitter and Instagram

Tue, 05/30/2017 - 1:02pm

Nine days ago, DJ Snake cancelled last minute on Hangout Music Festival, and removed his Twitter and Instagram accounts the same day. At the same time, he also put out one last cryptic Snap that read, “You disappointed me,” when translated from his native French to English.

The worry was compounded this past weekend when he also cancelled a scheduled show in Las Vegas.

Since then, fans and even fellow producers have wondered, “Where is Snake?”

Where in the world is @djsnake

— YUNG SLUGZ (@snailmusic) May 22, 2017

At the risk of oversimplifying it, he’s in Paris.

DJ Snake returned to Snapchat today, and shared a picture of a nondescript bridge in Paris. If nothing else, it lets us know that he’s seen people wondering and worrying about him. Perhaps he’s just been vacationing this entire time? He doesn’t have any tour dates until the end of June, so it’s highly possible.

He’s also officially reactivated his Twitter and Instagram accounts. Whether or not he’ll offer up an explanation for his absence is unknown, but we’re glad to have him back.

Odesza Debuted At Least Two New Songs This Weekend At Red Rocks

Mon, 05/29/2017 - 6:26pm

Odesza played a double header this weekend in Colorado at Red Rocks Amphitheater, celebrating Memorial Day weekend this year. As they’ve just started teasing new music, including singles “Line Of Sight” and “Late Night,” fans expected to hear lots of goodies this weekend… and Odesza delivered.

One of our staff was in attendance at the show, and caught at least two new unreleased tracks from Odesza.

Both tracks are quintessential Odesza, fusing new-age progressive house vibes with emotional vocals and a rhythm entirely unique to them. Check out the tracks below! (There’s still a third unreleased track that you can see on our Snapchat @ youredm.)

32 Hospitalized, Nearly 50 Arrested At This Year’s Sunset Music Festival

Mon, 05/29/2017 - 4:24pm

More than 50,000 people traveled to Raymond James Stadium in Tampa this past weekend for the annual Sunset Music Festival, but definitely took the occasion as an excuse for some unsafe or ill-advised behavior.

Official numbers after the festival state that 32 attendees were transported to hospitals on Saturday alone. Temperatures at the festival reached the 90s over Memorial Day Weekend; however, the festival provided free water stations, as well as canopies and cooling areas. An additional 65 attendees were treated on-site on Saturday, for non-life threatening reasons, such as dehydration and intoxication. Preliminary information indicates that very few transports were suspected to be drug related.

Authorities are still waiting to receive the final numbers of those hospitalized on Sunday.

According to Tampa Police Department Public Information Officer Stephen Hegarty, there were also 30 felony arrests and 16 misdemeanor arrests at the festival, 13 more total than last year. Arrests were up this year compared to last as SMF enforced a zero-tolerance policy for drugs on the premises.

There were also 47 ejections from the festival and five citations for possession of marijuana.

Hegarty told ABC News there were “no major criminal incidents on either day of the festival.”

“Protecting the health, safety and welfare of our fans and our community is Sunset MusicFestival’s (SMF) top priority,” said SMF promoter John Santoro. “SMF has worked successfully in collaboration with Tampa Sports Authority (TSA), Tampa Police Department (TPD) and Tampa Fire Rescue (TFR), to create and maintain a safe environment at this year’s festival. Our increased security measures kept fans safe; additional medical personnel and hydration strategies kept fans healthy. While any medical incidents are unfortunate, we are pleased that all medical incidents at this year’s Festival were non-life- threatening and consistent with medical incidents typical to large events.  SMF pays for all medical and safety resources, at and beyond the levels prescribed to us by TPD, TFR and TSA, in order to meet anticipated Festival demands and not overtax city resources.”

Your EDM Premiere: Mike Sayre’s ‘Floes/Flows’

Mon, 05/29/2017 - 12:47pm

With EDM as popular as it is nowadays, it’s sometimes tough to remember that not all electronic music is dance music. To wit: electronic music started out as science more than anything else, with French engineers recording train sounds on loops via wax cylinders in the 1890s. Electronica wasn’t even considered dance music as recently as the 70s, where Tangerine Dream, Brian Eno and even Kraftwerk were considered more wacky extensions of rock at best and just experimental noise at worst.

Now, more ambient and experimental electronica is seen as a part of EDM in the broader sense, but it often comes from a very different place than the average house, trap or even downtempo producer. Mike Sayre is an electronic musician who follows more in the footsteps of Brian Eno, Tangerine Dream and, more accurately, Philip Glass when making his interesting ambient creations. Sayre is a classically trained French horn player and composer, and he also holds a degree in Digital Media, which sort of explains his penchant for electronica. In his new EP, Music for Icebergs, however, more is revealed about his electronic composition as he takes the listener through the journey of the glaciers, with a subtle commentary on climate change and global warming.

While many of the tracks on Music for Icebergs seem like little more than ambient wind, cracking ice and a few musical notes here and there, one track stands out as more melodic and evocative. “Floes/Flows” opens with lots of ambient nature sounds just like the others on the album, and the listener will get the impression that they are in some sort of ice cave, hearing the cracking of massive sheets of ice around them with sounds of boats, cars or  even chainsaws coming through from outside. The soundscape then changes and dripping water is heard for a full two minutes before the melody comes in, just past the two minute mark. As the music builds, so does the sound of the water, and the two compliment each other to give a real emotive and evocative experience of what it might be like to be inside and ice floe. It’s calming and terrifying at the same time, and the listener is subjected to both the beautiful sound of rushing water and the creak and crack of the ice. The music changes keys, tones and tempos to move along with these sounds.

“Floes/Flows” and indeed all of the tracks on Music of Icebergs, are examples of composed electronic pieces which are sparse, subtle and meant to say more than the average EDM tune. This is a segment of electronic music not often explored by EDM fans, but once in a while it’s good to look at all the ways electronic music can be used to express feelings, thoughts and even the drama of nature.

Music for Icebergs releases in full and will be available on Teknofonic Records on Friday, June 2.
