Your EDM Premiere: Jupiter Project & Karmadella – Temporary Love (feat. Libby Offord)

Thu, 06/01/2017 - 3:24pm

About 6 months ago I premiered the debut original single from New Zealand- based producers Karmadella on homegrown imprint Jupiter Republic. Karmadella has been quietly making music since then but now they’re happy to share their forthcoming single with fellow producers Jupiter Project, who actually own Jupiter Republic, . and vocalist Libby Offord.

“Temporary Love” plays out like the warm summery track you’d expect a name like “Temporary Love.” Warm synths and mellow tropical percussion come together with Libby Offord’s vocals to usher in summer. While you get the sense that Libby has all the vocal range and the flair for an even edgier introduction, she does an awesome job showing restraint with her vocals to complement the bright production.

Calvin Harris Collaboration With Frank Ocean & Migos “Slide” Achieves Platinum Certification

Thu, 06/01/2017 - 1:31pm

In case you haven’t heard, “Slide” by Calvin Harris just achieved Platinum status in the United States making it his 9th single to achieve the coveted sale certification mark. Knowing Calvin Harris it was always going to be inevitable, but regardless, it’s still an incredible achievement.

The single, which featured Frank Ocean’s soulful vocals and Quavo and Offset from popular rap trio Migos, took the streaming world by storm consistently remaining a fixture in Spotify’s daily top 20 songs since its release back in late February for close to three straight months. In fact, it’s only since mid-May that the track has finally started to slow down and even then it remains around the #30 mark on Spotify’s daily charts.

SLIDE is officially platinum!!! Thank you!!!

— Calvin Harris (@CalvinHarris) May 31, 2017

In case you were wondering, Calvin’s full list of RIAA Platinum certified singles looks like this…

  • “Feel So Close” – 3x Platinum
  • “Sweet Nothing (feat. Florence Welch)” – 2x Platinum
  • “I Need your Love (feat. Ellie Goulding”) – Platinum
  • “Summer” – 3x Platinum
  • “Blame (feat. John Newman)” – Platinum
  • “Outside (feat. Ellie Goulding)” – Platinum
  • “How Deep Is Your Love” – Platinum
  • “This Is What You Came For (feat. Rihanna)” – 2x Platinum
  • “Slide (feat. Frank Ocean & Migos)” – Platinum

OH, and while we’re at it, don’t forget his feature appearance on Rihanna’s “We Found Love” – a single that went Platinum a ridiculous nine times over. In any case, congratulations are certainly due for Calvin Harris who’s now achieved a hit summer single in seven straight years.

New Artist Spotlight: NTFRMHRE [Video]

Thu, 06/01/2017 - 12:33pm

Philly-based pop trap artist NTFRMHRE has an interesting sound on the first single off his forthcoming debut EP. “Somebody Like You” features a vocalist who seems to be a little tone deaf, and the trap beat in the track can be a little unsatisfying, but somehow this song is still highly danceable and works as a decent piece of EDM. What is this brand new EDM artist’s angle, aside from having a general disdain for vowels, one might wonder?

Derrick Surragh adapted his nearly vowel-less moniker for the NTFRMHRE project this year, but he is already known in the Philadelphia EDM scene, and he’s also classically trained in some capacity as he works in drum line composition for the Philadelphia Eagles. This might explain his sort of different composition style with “Somebody Like You”, which has more of a pop feel and a beginning and an end to it than many pop EDM tracks like it.

The biggest issue on “Somebody Like You” from an EDM standpoint is the seeming lack of a drop in this song. It’s a sort of snare-heavy beat from the more hip hop trap tradition in the sense that it’s minimal and the bass stays constant rather than breaking and dropping. Instead the crescendo comes through the vocal chorus. It’s thus a little difficult to classify, and the fact that the vocals are flat in relationship to the track make this piece even more of a head-scratcher.

“Somebody Like You” is by no means a bad song, and its corresponding video is a beautiful love story with sweeping camera angles and heartfelt sentiment. Trying to classify and figure out where NTFRMHRE was going with this track, however, is still a little blurred. It will be interesting to see once the full EP comes out if this EDM-adjacent artist leans more pop or perfects the art of the drop. NTFRMHRE’s debut EP, 4th Dimension, will release early this summer.

Your EDM New Artist Spotlight: Meanr Mynr [Video]

Thu, 06/01/2017 - 12:33pm

Whatever happened to Ratatat? To jog memories, that was the electronica-driven guitar group who exploded onto the indie and electronic scene in the late 00s and filled hipster bars up and down both coasts with cutting-edge yet familiar guitar sounds. That trend seems to have fizzled a bit, but there’s a new guitar/electronic marriage on the scene now in the form of Meanr Mynr, and he’s got a new album releases just in time to fill hipster bars once again this summer.

Meanr Mynr is a solo act based out of Denver who started playing guitar as a teen and has done a lot of studio and production work for other bands. He became influenced by these other acts both on the guitar end of the spectrum, picking up more classical techniques to merge with his own blues fusion sound, but also in the realms of hip hop and electronica.

Meanr Mynr’s is called The Compound, and it’s definitely clear from the album’s first single, “Blasé”, that he’s taken his newfound interest in electronic music and run with it. Having named one of his major hip hop/EDM influences as The Glitch Mob, it’s easy to see how Meanr Mynr’s own drum machine work mirrors The Glitch Mob and other hip hop/electronic crossover production. From this track it’s also clear that Meanr Mynr, real name Reggie Sudduth is somewhat of a guitar virtuoso, combining the afore-mentioned glitchy hip hop beats with blues guitar in a way that’s surprising but also totally works as a cohesive song.

As Meanr Mynr continues to experiment with his sound and the different electronic elements he wants to insert, it’s clear that he has the diversity and vision to take his project beyond the trends. The Compound released on May 19 and is available to stream or buy on Meanr Mynr’s Bandcamp page.

MYRNE & Popeska – Get It All feat. Emily Hendrix [Monstercat]

Thu, 06/01/2017 - 5:12am

Simply said, 2017 has been the year of unexpected, yet absolutely monumental collaborations on Monstercat. Just last month (with the release of Uncaged Vol. 1) the label gave us the ultra-heavy mega-collaboration “Unity” (which came only weeks after Aero Chord and Wolfgang Gartner‘s more-than-shocking “Borneo“), so having another crazy collision on our hands is quite the treat.

When “Get It All” was premiered on Monstercat’s weekly podcast three weeks ago as an ID, many listeners were quick to pin it as SlushiiDion Timmer‘s highly-anticipated collaboration (probably due to its gleeful trap tones and colorful vocal chops) but the true masterminds behind the track were none other than Monstercat’s newest recruit – MYRNE – and the electronic music vet Popeska.

While a release of this general caliber is no big surprise for the likes of MYRNE, “Get It All” is a huge change of pace for Popeska (whose last Monstercat release was a hard-hitting electro/breaks remix of Vicetone‘s “Heartbeat” in 2013). For being such a broad hybrid of sounds, “Get It All” ends up coming out surprisingly chill. That’s not to say that the track is at all disappointing, it just definitely takes some getting used to given the two names behind it.

What do you think about “Get It All?” Listen to the track and download below:

California Senate Passes Bill Extending Last Call To 4AM

Wed, 05/31/2017 - 11:36pm

The California Senate just voted to pass a landmark bill to extend last call to 4am!

This is huge news, and will no doubt work to further boost an already popular nightlife scene, especially in cities like Los Angeles. The city of Angels is well known as one of the biggest cities for music and EDM in the world.

The bill does not force communities to extend hours this late, however localities are allowed to extend the hours to 4am if they see fit; and considering the easily cleared vote-to-pass, we expect many cities to be welcoming this with open arms should it pass through the Assembly and be signed by the Governor.

Urban Outfitters Once Again Leaks Another Halsey Album Days Before Release

Wed, 05/31/2017 - 9:49pm

Urban Outfitters is generally a safe haven for hipsters and millennials – they’ve gone beyond just selling clothes in recent years, offering new music and even electronics, as well as plenty of branded items. In fact, in 2015, they were an exclusive partner with Halsey to release her debut album Badlands… but that didn’t turn out as planned.

In 2015, Urban Outfitters shipped out copies of her album two weeks early; as if that wasn’t enough, the store then sold physical copies of the album three days before its official release. Halsey was mad but apparently not mad enough as she partnered with the store again for the release of her new album Hopeless Fountain Kingdom.

Surprise… they did it again, two days before the official release.

Halsey fans have been tweeting at the artist complaining that album vinyls are currently available at the retail store, and they are pissed. Normally, fans would be happy about getting music early, but this is the second time that Halsey has been fucked over by UO and her fans are standing with her in solidarity. Her label, Astralwerks, obviously isn’t that happy about the situation either.

hey ~ can u DM us?

— Astralwerks (@Astralwerks) May 30, 2017

Urban Outfitters issued a statement apologizing for the mistake. According to the store, the album was only stocked at one location in Chicago but pulled before any units were sold. Read the full statement:

Halsey’s latest album was inadvertently put on the sales floor in a UO store in Chicago. We communicated with the store team and immediately pulled the albums and confirmed this was isolated to that store only. The SKU for the album was not activated in our system so no units were sold; this precaution ensures that no albums are purchased before official release dates. We apologize to Halsey and her label. We took multiple steps to ensure this wouldn’t happen and are now conducting an internal review to determine how such a mistake could have occurred.

Sunset Music Festival Returns with Bass Music Leading the Way [Event Review]

Wed, 05/31/2017 - 9:27pm

Memorial Day weekend in Tampa, Florida becomes the home for Sunset Music Festival every year. Last year, headliners included the Chainsmokers, Jack Ü, Galantis, and Hardwell cementing the overwhelming presence of pop-influenced EDM and electro house. This year, however, decided to recruits headliners and most of the main stage’s acts who have made names for themselves with trap, dubstep, moombahton, and future bass. Covering those bases were RL Grime, Zeds Dead, and Major Lazer while the final headliners were trance legends Above & Beyond.

Saturday kicked off with opening performances from K?D and 4B at the Sunset Stage (main stage). Where K?D’s dark and gritty sounds had the crowd swaying and head-banging, 4B’s set had the people jumping and throwing their hands in the air to his moombah rhythm and trap bangers. Meanwhile at the Eclipse Stage, Monstercat alumni Unlike Pluto and San Holo ruled the late afternoon slots with their peculiar styles in bass music. If you were looking for a consistency in four-to-the-floor music, the Horizon Stage boasted Drezo, Brohug, and Wax Motif, with pro-wrestling legend Hulk Hogan joining Miami producer/DJ Cedric Gervais  for his slot.

But the real kings of Saturday included Ghastly at the Eclipse Stage who brought Slushii on board towards the end of his set for a back-2-back that was tenacious and heavy with rumbling rounds of the speakers booming into the evening. Slushii also ruled his solo slot on the Sunset Stage. With every ferocious dubstep banger in his arsenal, the audience was head-banging and opening up mosh pits to every other song. Then there was RL Grime blending his atmospheric trap music with contemporary hip-hop tracks like “Black Beatles” from Rae Sremmurd, “HUMBLE” by Kendrick Lamar, and “Goosebumps” from Travis Scott. If there was a winner among these champions for day one of Sunset Music Festival, I have to lean with RL with his grandiose visuals and omnipresent sound throughout his set.

Sunday kicked off with ALOK, Crywolf, Kungs, and Infuze across all the stages. Since it was early in the afternoon, I stopped in to check out the Bud Light Chill House which had its own DJ set up, games of over-sized Jenga, and popsicles made of Bud Light that were free for guests. It was the perfect air-conditioned spot to cool off and escape from the sunny Tampa heat. The next destination was a combination of MK‘s set at the Horizon stage and Ookay breaking necks at the Sunset Stage.

The winners of day two were neck and neck with their visual graphics, serendipitous mixing, and crowd reactions. The first of these extraordinary acts was Louis the Child at the Sunset Stage who played a beautiful set filled with their relaxing take on future bass. Spag Heddy dropped an intense amount of riddim and dubstep that could not be matched by most of the headliners throughout Sunset Music Festival. The following performance from KAYZO obliterated the audience by utilizing a dense selection of hardstyle and happy hardcore.

Aside from the musical performances and the entertainment services provided by SMF, security and medical personnel were completely on top of their game when dealing with the incoming ravers the whole weekend. With the nearly 50 arrests and zero deaths reported, the authorities on law enforcement and medical staff met the most important rule of any festival: keeping everyone safe to the best of their ability.

All in all, Sunset Music Festival 2017 was a massive success. Venturing with newer headliners, offering a variety of foods and beverages, and maintaining a high standard of safety, SMF continues to grow as one of the Sunshine State’s most popular music festival.

Wed, 05/31/2017 - 7:37pm

If Haides wanted to make a good impression with his debut extended player, he has certainly done so. This week sees the release of his ‘Faith’ collection, four tracks that allow the listener to get to know the vibes of this up and coming artist.

With a sweeping, majestic cut as its first track in the form of the luscious ‘Open,’ things get even better with the rhythmically sharp ‘Need This,’ an instantly infectious piece. He teams with vocalists Adam James and Camilla Grey for the subsequent title track and ‘Communications’ – the latter is an unbelievably good, deeply powerful tune that builds and builds to a cinematic climax.

The Stars Have Aligned, as Rezz Announces She’s Working with TroyBoi

Wed, 05/31/2017 - 7:21pm

Our imaginations are running wild after the queen of dark and bassy beats, Rezz announced her and TroyBoi, the master of experimental trap, will be working together soon!

After exchanging unreleased “stuff,” they agreed it would be a good fit. And, luckily for both fan bases they sealed the deal on Twitter with confirmations on each end — so we know it’s real. Just look:

Me n Troyboi sent eachother some unreleased stuff. We decided we should def work together at some point soon

— RΞZZ (@OfficialRezz) May 30, 2017

— TroyBoi (@TroyBoiMusic) May 30, 2017

Both producers, which seem to be from other yet complimentary planets, are trailblazers in their respective genres with the ability to make something truly unique happen here. While TroyBoi has been prominently recognized for his work on “Soundclash” with Flosstradamus, his own craft has branched into areas of trap we didn’t know existed. Meanwhile, Rezz continues to push the envelope again and again with her dark soundscape first discovered by Mau5trap.

If you play some of their material back to back, it starts to make even more total sense… We can’t wait to hear this collaboration!

It’s also rumored that Rezz and GRiZ are working together after conversation between the two sparked on Twitter (read here) — sounds like another mind blowing collaboration just waiting to happen!

Coachella 2018 Dates & Pre-Sale Information Revealed

Wed, 05/31/2017 - 6:04pm

Coachella was only a month ago, but it’s already time to start preparing for 2018.

Dates for Coachella 2018 have just been revealed, April 13-15 and 20-22. And while the lineup generally isn’t released until around January, we already know the first headliner: it’s Beyoncé.

Part of the agreement of Beyoncé pulling out of 2017 was her agreeing to headline 2018, so it’s still a win-win.

In other related news, the advance sale for tickets is this Friday, June 2, 2017 @ 11:00 am PDT. It is the only time to take advantage of the Coachella payment plan. Find more information on that here.

SAYMYNAME Teams Up With Buygore For “Turn Up Da Bass”

Wed, 05/31/2017 - 6:03pm

The dance scene is no stranger to the hard trap godfather, nor are they foreigners to the now-Armada label “Buygore.” SAYMYNAME’s most recent release “Turn Up the Bass” is a cross between the young producer’s love for that blood pumping energy filled hard trap sound and a more melodic, groovy undertaking.

The tune starts off with an infectious scaling melody and as the song turns for the drop, it grows in a bright and aggressive synth that makes your calmest of friends want to rage their faces off. If nothing else, this tune gives us a look beyond the veil of what SAYMYNAME has in his arsenal, and to be honest, we love it.

Turn up your speakers and get ready for a ride.

AWAY – Sleepwalker (feat. London Thor)

Wed, 05/31/2017 - 5:35pm

AWAY is one of my absolute favorite artists right now. Everything he’s made thus far has been gold – from his debut remix of THEY.’s “Motley Crue,” to his most recent remix of BØRNS’ “American Money”. Now, after a long few months, he has just put out his debut original.

“Sleepwalker” is a dark song, filled with beautiful writing and emotion. Starting off quickly with London Thor’s vocal resting above a guitar and strings, the song quickly moves towards its climax through a somber prechorus. Upon reaching the songs climax, we’re treated with a sonic flurry. With glitchy synthesis, a dark vocal chop, and massive drums, the song truly takes a turn from somber to pure darkness.

In my opinion, the song is a masterpiece, and AWAY is one of the most talented songwriters/producers coming up right now. Listen to the song below, and enjoy a free download through Lowly Palace here!

India’s Sanjoy Delivers Groovy Bass Edit Of His Hit “Obvi”

Wed, 05/31/2017 - 5:27pm

I first stumbled upon Sanjoy a few months ago on Spotify. His sound made me feel like a cross between color festivals in India and the pop EDM world The Chainsmokers are dominating. The young producer has already seen incredible success collaborating with American Idol season five alum, Elliot Yamin. Sanjoy a native from San Jose, says of the original, “Those are the moments in life one can never forget and that everyone could connect to instantly.”

This version takes us on a journey of musical discovery; keeping the vibe of the original, Sanjoy explores what the bass vision of his sound could represent. Weaving and diving between synths this drop builds and turns to allow you to groove and jump all at the same time.

Earlier this year, Jason Lymangrover from iHeart had some thoughts about the current and upcoming music — “Directly on the heels of the 2016 release, Sanjoy recorded two more singles, ‘Obvious’ and “Shangri-La.’ Each continued his proclivity for cross-hatching genres by including Bollywood influences, but skillfully coalesced a dance-friendly, mainstream, blue-eyed pop format as well.”

Listen to Sanjoy’s “ethnic bass” remix of his hit “Obvi” below.
